Homeschool Math

crystalwalkerautho

We have been homeschooling for around 8 years! It's kind of crazy to think we have been at it for this long. The first several years we switched between different curriculums trying to find what fit us best. I will share the math programs we are using, but keep in mind each student and family is unique! Use what works best for your family/children.

(I am not sponsored by either program, just sharing what we like!)

When we started homeschooling I knew that I wanted a math curriculum. I have always struggled with math and wanted a program that offered a lot of support. My oldest son who we started homeschooling with was very self motivated and math came very easy to him.

After lots of research we decided on using Math-U-See program. It is a mastery based program where students learn a topic and practice it until it is mastered. This fit well with my oldest's learning style. It also workings with math manipulatives which was helpful for me as I am a visual learner.

Math-U-See can be somewhat expensive. To help with the cost we found our blocks on ebay for way cheaper than buying new. For the books I have only ever bought one set for each level. We use plastic sleeves over each pages to do the work and wipe it clean. That may sound like a lot of work, but I have now used each level (bought only once!) 3 times! This has been a huge help.

Fast forward several years and my youngest son is struggling a little with Math-U-See. He struggles to learn concepts quickly and just doesn't seem to be progressing like his brothers have. We are still using it with him but we have started adding a little of a new curriculum.

The Good and The Beautiful has a new math curriculum and as we use them for other parts of our schooling (future post!) we figured why not.

So far my son is loving the curriculum. We did go a level behind what he is at to try to review some topics that he is struggling with. Because some of the work is easy for him he is building confidence (which this little guy needs) and is able to zip through the pages. We are working on level K with my daughter and she too has really enjoyed this curriculum.

I haven't decided if The Good and The Beautiful will completely replace Math-U-See or not, but I wanted to share both as great options!

If you homeschool let me know what math you use and love with your kiddos!
